United Nations COP28 App

UI, DESIGN SYSTEM & ANIMATION

COP28, the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), was the largest mega event ever hosted in Dubai. This high-profile conference brought together world leaders, climate activists, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss and negotiate global climate policies aimed at tackling the pressing climate crisis. The significance of this event required a digital solution that could manage the diverse needs of thousands of attendees while also providing a platform for interaction and engagement. As such, the COP28 app was developed with the aim of enhancing attendee participation, streamlining logistics, and serving as a central hub for all conference-related activities. Beyond just creating an event app, we focused on defining a clear User Interface (UI) and developing a thorough design system that would serve not only the immediate needs of COP28 but also lay the groundwork for future COP events.

APP FEATURES AND DESIGN CHALLENGES

The COP28 app was designed with a host of features to meet the diverse requirements of the event and its attendees. The app included a dynamic content feed for real-time updates, a detailed event directory with booking capabilities, interactive maps for easy navigation, and a comprehensive calendar to help attendees plan their schedules efficiently. One of the key aspects of the app was the dual access control system, which allowed for tailored experiences based on user type. Public users were granted access to general content, while delegates had exclusive access to higher-tier resources and functions. One of the main challenges we faced was ensuring that the design system we created was not only scalable but also adaptable for future COP events. It needed to accommodate the varied needs of users across different regions and events while maintaining a consistent look and feel. This required a highly flexible, yet cohesive design system that could support both present and future requirements.

DESIGN PROCESS AND COLLABORATION

Our design process was rooted in thorough user research and a strong collaborative approach. We began by conducting user research to understand the diverse needs of attendees and stakeholders, which informed the wireframes and prototypes we developed. We also ran usability tests to identify pain points and areas for improvement, ensuring that the app would be intuitive and easy to use for both public users and delegates. A robust design system was created, detailing the guidelines and best practices for consistency across different components and features. The UI design focused on visual appeal, usability, and accessibility, ensuring that attendees could effortlessly navigate the appís content, book events, and engage with conference activities. In collaboration with the development team, we worked to seamlessly integrate our designs into the app, with particular attention to ensuring the secure access control systems worked smoothly for different user groups. This iterative process ensured that our design met both the functional and aesthetic goals, resulting in an efficient and visually compelling app experience.

DESIGN SYSTEM

The COP28 app was widely praised for its intuitive design and ease of use, with features like the event directory and calendar simplifying session management for attendees. The scalable design system we built laid the groundwork for future COP events, allowing future designers and developers to easily build upon it. The power of this design system lies in its flexibility, consistency, and ability to streamline updates, making it a powerful tool for creating cohesive, high-quality user experiences across different events. By offering a reusable foundation, it ensures future COP apps will maintain a strong, unified identity, while reducing development time and enhancing efficiency.
